Mastitis ๐Ÿผ

WHAT IS IT?

Think: clogged boobies! Mastitis is an infection that occurs as a result of bacteria entering the nipple and growing inside the milk ๐Ÿผ 

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MASTITIS

  • Breast pain 
  • Fever ๐Ÿค’ 
  • Breast tenderness and swelling 

TREATMENT FOR MASTITIS

  • Since mastitis is a bacterial infection, the man treatment for it includes antibiotics
    • Antibiotics used ๐Ÿ’Š
      • Dicloxacillin ๐Ÿ’Š
      • Cephalexin ๐Ÿ’Š
  • Analgesics: ibuprofen (for pain) ๐Ÿ˜ฐ
  • Drain the breasts frequently (empty milk that the bacteria is growing in)
    • Mainly through breastfeeding or pumping 
  • Fluids ๐Ÿ’ง
  • Rest ๐Ÿ˜ด
  • Proper latching of infant on the breast
    • A tight seal around the areola of the breast is the correct position during breastfeeding ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ
    • When the infant is not properly latching, blistering can occur to the breast, which can cause/further infection
  • Avoid usage of soaps on the breasts
    • Can lead to cracking 
      • If cracking occurs, expose the breasts to dry air after feedings
    • Avoid underwire bras
      • Bra should be supportive but form-fitting ๐Ÿ‘™
